Fairfield High School was like a scoring machine Friday night.
With a 34-0 halftime lead and the game well in hand, the Falcons didn’t let up in pummeling winless Vintage, 62-0, at Napa Memorial Stadium.
The Falcons (5-2 overall, 1-1 Monticello Empire League) were not only passing the ball in a 25-point third quarter. But they also faked a punt from their own 32-yard line in the fourth quarter with Angelo Perry taking off on a 43-yard run and later getting a 34-yard field goal from Chris McCallister with just 1:54 to go.
Instead of burning time off the clock by just running the ball, they put the ball in the air.
“That shows what they’re all about,” Vintage coach Billy Smith said of the Falcons. “They had the better athletes tonight, they had the game in hand. It’s just unfortunate that a coach like Jack (Canavesio), he would do that kind of thing. Have a little respect for us.
“Again, everything comes around. Our kids handled themselves really well with all that adversity, with the trick plays, the fake punt, the reverses, the pass plays, to build stats. I’m disappointed in what he did. But I’m never going to forget this loss. I don’t think a lot of our kids are going to forget this. I can’t wait until we get another shot at them.”
It was the worst loss of the season for Vintage (0-7 overall, 0-2 MEL). The seven straight losses to start a season is a school record for the Crushers, who were shut out for the third time this year and held to just seven first downs.
Fairfield dominated the Crushers throughout the game, scoring in its first five possessions of the first half behind Tra’Mayne Bondurant, one of the league’s top players, who hurt Vintage with his outstanding running and passing skills.
Bondurant threw five touchdown passes, ran for another score and torched the Crushers for 296 yards in the air.
Bondurant came into the game, having passed for 1,226 yards and 17 touchdowns. Bondurant completed passes to six different receives.
Ta’lon McKinley caught TD passes of 5, 16 and 3 yards from Bondurant as the Falcons moved the ball up and down the field. They had scoring drives covering 75, 37, 75, 70, 66, 63, 84 and 64 yards.
De’vonte Street scored on touchdown runs of 4, 1 and 13 yards, respectively. Kyle Wagner caught a 20-yard TD pass from Bondurant and Erik Manuel caught a 28-yard TD pass from Bondurant.
With a commanding lead, Fairfield attempted eight passes in the third quarter.
The Crushers were forced to punt seven times and were led by Zach Zuniga’s 86 yards rushing on 12 carries. Vintage’s passing game was held to just 16 yards on four completions.
Vintage turned the ball over on downs after driving to the Fairfield 19-yard line. The drive stalled when Jackson Maher was sacked by Antoine Williams for an 11-yard loss with 9:21 to go in the first half.
Maher’s pass to Zuniga on a fourth down and 8 resulted in a two-yard loss, giving Fairfield the ball at the Falcons’ 16-yard line in the third quarter.
The Crushers turned it over on downs later in the third quarter after four plays gained eight yards. Adam Duprez was intercepted in the fourth period for Vintage’s only turnover of the game.
Fairfield was not only successful passing the ball, but running it as well. The Falcons had 372 yards rushing.
